Kia Optima Receives Top Rating in Latest Safety Test
WASHINGTON — The 2008 Kia Optima received the highest score in front-end and the second-highest score in the side test amonst several midsized sedans in crash results released today by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In rear-end testing, the Optima was the only vehicle tested to receive a top rating.
A "strong safety record" by Kia as a carmaker, said spokesman Alex Fedorak has been proven in these results and noted that the Insurance Institute has said its side-impact test features severe crash conditions. The institute's frontal crash test simulates a 40 mph crash and its effect on the driver, while the rear test simulates 20 mph. The side crash simulates what would happen if the car was struck in the side by a sport utility vehicle at 31 mph. The side crash test uses dummies in both the front and rear seats.
